Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV) is the virus that causes chickenpox, a highly contagious disease that usually causes an itchy, blister-like rash that appears on the chest, back, and face and spreads over the entire body. Chickenpox can be serious, even life-threatening for some people.
CDC recommends two doses of chickenpox vaccine for children, adolescents, and adults who have never had chickenpox and were never vaccinated. The two-dose series is more than 90% effective at preventing chickenpox. Children are recommended to receive the first dose at 12 through 15 months old and a second dose at 4 through 6 years old. Adults 18+ who never had chickenpox and were never vaccinated can receive their two-dose series at any age.
